influence of O.Henry’s Heritage

Reread the biography of O. Henry.  Then reread the paragraph on page 42 that compares Jimmy Valentine to a phoenix.

How does this comparison reflect O.Henry’s background and beliefs?

Does the character of Jimmy Valentine further explain why O. Henry kept his real name and real  identity a secret?

    O. Henry (1862-1910) was a prolific American short-story writer, a master of surprise endings, who wrote about the life of ordinary people in New York City. A twist of plot, which turns on an ironic or coincidental circumstance, is typical of O. Henry’s stories. While in prison O. Henry started to write short stories to earn money to support his daughter Margaret. His first work, “Whistling Dick’s Christmas Stocking” (1899), appeared in McClure’s Magazine. After doing three years of the five years sentence, Porter emerged from the prison in 1901 and changed his name to O. Henry.

  3. Dear Miss Huda and Classmates:
    O. Henry (1862-1910) was originally born William Sydney Porter in Greensboro, North Carolina.
He moved to Austin, Texas where he worked as a bank teller. He moved again to Houston, Texas in 1895 and became a newspaper columnist. He doesn’t want to go to prison for his crime, O. Henry fled to Honduras, and stayed there for six months before returning to the United States. In the prison, he began writing short stories and it is there that he took the pen-name O. Henry for his writing. He is the author of over 250 stories and is most famous for his use of surprise.
In my opinion, O.Henry is same like Jimmy, because he enterned the prison like him. After that, he became a writer.
    Thank you!

  4. Dear miss Huda
In my opinion the writer o.henry wanted to send a certain point or a massage by writing to let readers understand his position ??and also he wanted to provide his daughter with money since he was In prison

  5. Dear Bloggers,
After reading both the selection “Retrieve Reformation” and the biography of O.Henry realized that the character O.Henry had created, Jimmy Valentine, is too similar to his own biography. First of all, O.Henry was born as William Sydney Porter while O.Henry became his pen name, exactly the same as Jimmy Valentine had done. In addition, both were imprisoned for few years! Moreover, they both reformed after being in love to someone. O.Henry was in love with his own daughter while Jimmy had loved Annabel. At last, Jimmy Valentine was compared with the phoenix because he was reformed and changed to be a better person.

  6. Dear miss. Huda and fellow class mates,
    O. Henry was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. he moved to Austin, Texas where he worked as a bank teller. He moved again to Houston, Texas in 1895 and became a newspaper columnist . In 1896, however, he was called back to Austin, where he was charged with embezzling money from the bank where he had worked. Not wanting to go to prison for his crime, O. Henry fled to Honduras, and stayed there for six months before returning to the United States. Upon his return, the court tried him and put him in an Ohio prison for three years. While in prison, he began writing short stories and it is there that he took the pen-name O. Henry for his writings. After his release from prison in 1901, he moved to New York, which is the setting for many of his stories. He is the author of over 250 stories and is most famous for his use of surprise or ‘twist’ endings. Notice the twists and surprises in the endings to “The Last Leaf”, “The Green Door”, and perhaps his most famous story, “The Gift of the Magi”.
    Thank you

  7. The writer O.henry known as William Sydney Porter was born on 1862 and died at 1910. He was arrested for embezzling money from the bank he used to work in. William was addicted to drinks so he died from drinking. Jimmy Valentine has a relation with a phoenix bird because the phoenix bird burns itself, then reforms from his dusts to make a new better life and Jimmy made like the phoenix; he changed his identity and reformed into a better person to live a better life. I think that the relation between O.Henry and Jimmy is that: Jimmy fell in love and changed his name into Ralph; also William did the same thing. Jimmy characterizes O.Henry in a positive way or that O.Henry wants to show us that he wanted to be as Jimmy, but couldn’t. O.Henry made this character to prove for us that he is not a bad fellow of heart. O.Henry and Jimmy kept their true identity a secret to show that they changed.

  8. Dear bloggers,
The similarity between Jimmy Valentine and O. Henry is that they both were in prison and they both changed their selves, so I think that O.Henry is Jimmy Valentine.

  11. Dear Miss Huda and 21century learners
Born William Sidney Porter, this master of short stories is much better known under his pen name “O. Henry.” He was born September 11, 1862 in North Carolina, where he spent his childhood. Also O.henry made jimmy’s personality very close to O.henry because jimmy drinks and O.henry the alcoholism was a reason of his death.

Jimmy valentine and the phoenix were similar because they both reformed, and I can say that every body can change.

  13. •Born: 11 September 1862

    •Died: 5 June 1910
•Best Known As: American short story writer

Name at birth: William Sydney Porter

    O. Henry was the pseudonym of William Sydney Porter, who wrote colorful short stories with surprising and ironic twists. His best-known titles included “The Last of the Troubadours,” “The Gift of the Magi” and “The Ransom of Red Chief.” Porter grew up in North Carolina, but moved to Texas in the 1880s. He worked as a draftsman, a bookkeeper, a bank teller and a newspaper columnist until 1898, when he was sent to prison for embezzlement (from his days as a teller in Austin). After more than three years in jail, O. Henry moved to New York to work full time as a writer. His short stories were masterworks of careful plotting and surprise endings: in The Ransom of Red Chief, for instance, a kidnapped tyke is so much trouble that the kidnappers end up paying the boy’s father to take him back. O. Henry’s work appeared in magazines and journals across the country and were collected in such books as Cabbages and Kings (1904), Heart of the West (1907) and The Voice of the City (1908). No stranger to alcohol and plagued by ill health, he died broke at the age of 47.

The Author O.Henry who is moved to Austin, Texas where he worked as a bank teller moved again to Houston, Texas in 1895 and became a newspaper columnist. In 1896, however, he was called back to Austin, where he was charged with embezzling money from the bank where he had worked. The court tried him and put him in an Ohio prison for three years. Lastly, that refers to Jimmy’s attitude. He compares the main character “Jimmy Valentine” to a phoenix. 18. Dear Miss Huda:
As we had said or talked in school, that O.Henry is not his name. O.Henry was the pen name of the American writer.

In the prison, he began writing short stories/

I think O.Henry is connected to Jimmy Valentine. He is connected because he was in the prison before becoming a writer. Jimmy Valetine was also a criminal before he reformed.!

    Thank you!

    2. O.Henry compares Jimmy Valentine as a phoneix because Jimmy rehabilitated himself from a safecracker to a gentelman.
3.Yes, because O.Henry Explains all he been through during prison so he decided to make Jimmy Valentine as a character that resembles Hisself.

  22. Dear all classmates:

Jimmy is compard to the pheonix because he was reformed and rehabitated himself into a good citizen.

in my opinion i think that O.Henry have some common things with him like they both entered jail. When William Sydney Porter chose O.Henry as his pen name, he chose it to hide his personality.

      Dear mrs.huda(punctuation error)
      O. Henry is jimmy (punctuation error) valintine (spelling mistake ) and he is telling his story life without making people knowing him (add a punctuation mark here) and the relation between jimmy and o. Henry (where is the verb?) that they were a theif (should be plural) and they changed ther self(change … doesn’t exist in English)
      Mrs. Huda

  24. Dear Miss Huda and fellow classmates:

In the selection “a retrieved reformation “,(story title… punctuation error) the narrator, O. Henry compares that main character, jimmy valentine (proper noun.. punctuation error) to a phoenix, he refers to his own life when he was a criminal, until he entered jail; since then his life completely changed and he became a writer. The background is reflected to O. Henry and the experience he had.I learned that time can change you and that if you follow your dream you can succeed.
I think O. Henry didn’t use his real name because he wanted to start a new page and he wanted to be known as O. Henry the magnificent not William Porter the criminal. In the story he was narrating an experience he had.

    Best Regards:

That when Jimmy saw Annabel he changed into a different person and when the phoenix die it changes into fire egg and then after a short time the phoenix changes totally and becomes more powerfull and forgot every thing about its old life, so Jimmy and phoenix has a common thing.

  30. Dear Miss Huda and fellow classmates,

As we all know William Sydney Porter’s pen name is O. Henry, an abounding American short story writer that used his real life events in his story “A Retrieved Reformation”. He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. His father was a physician. When William was three, his mother died, and he was raised by his paternal grandmother and aunt. William was an avid reader, but at the age of fifteen he left school, and then worked in a drug store and on a Texas ranch. He moved to Houston, where he had a number of jobs, including that of bank clerk. After moving to Austin, Texas, in 1882, he married. In 1884 he started a humorous weekly The Rolling Stone. When the weekly failed, he joined the Houston Post as a reporter and columnist. In 1897 he was convicted of embezzling money, although there has been much debate over his actual guilt. In 1898 he entered a penitentiary at Columbus, Ohio. While in prison O. Henry started to write short stories to earn money to support his daughter Margaret. His first work, “Whistling Dick’s Christmas Stocking” (1899), appeared in McClure’s Magazine. After doing three years of the five years sentence, Porter emerged from the prison and changed his name to O. Henry. O. Henry’s last years were shadowed by alcoholism, ill health, and financial problems. He married Sara Lindsay Coleman in 1907, but the marriage was not happy, and they separated a year later. O. Henry died of cirrhosis of the liver on June 5, 1910, in New York. Moreover, he and Jimmy Valentine shared several characteristics and they both had the same character.

William Sydney Porter serves as a character twin to Jimmy for several grounds. First of all, they almost had the same life of being a prisoner due to stealing saves. Despite that fact, they are both good and kind at heart.

  37. Dear Miss Huda and fellow classmates:

William Sidney Porter was born on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina. His middle name at birth was Sidney; he changed the spelling to Sydney in 1898. His parents were Dr. Algernon Sidney Porter (1825–1888), a physician, and Mary Jane Virginia Swaim Porter (1833–1865). They were married April 20, 1858. When William was three, his mother died from tuberculosis, and he and his father moved into the home of his maternal grandmother. As a child, Porter was always reading, everything from classics to dime novels; his favorite works were Lane’s translation of One Thousand and One Nights, and Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy.
Porter gave various explanations for the origin of his pen name. It was during these New Orleans days that he adopted his pen name of O. Henry.
I think O. Henry didn’t use his real name because he wanted to start a new page and he wanted to be known as O. Henry the magnificent not William Porter the criminal. In the story he was narrating an experience he had.

  51. Dear Miss Huda and classmates,
American writer William Porter never explained how he came up with his penname O. Henry. There are a few popular theories:
•The Harrells, with whom Porter stayed in Austin, had a cat named Henry that Porter would play with. The cat would come running when Porter would shout “Oh, Henry!”
•He took the name from the place he was imprisoned, the Ohio Penitentiary.
•In New Orleans, before he left for Honduras, Porter would often call to the, bartender in the saloon and often said “Oh Henry, set ‘em up again!”

  52. In the selection “a retrieved reformation “, the narrator, O. Henry compares that main character, jimmy valentine to a phoenix. The phoenix refers to his own life when he was a criminal, until he entered the jail; his life completely changed and became a writer. His biography taught me that people no matter what was their past or future, no matter what ages are they can become something important.

    • Dear Yara:

Porter gave various explanations for the origin of his pen name.[5] In 1909 he gave an interview to The New York Times, in which he gave an account of it:
It was during these New Orleans days that I adopted my pen name of O. Henry. I said to a friend: “I’m going to send out some stuff. I don’t know if it amounts to much, so I want to get a literary alias. Help me pick out a good one.” He suggested that we get a newspaper and pick a name from the first list of notables that we found in it. In the society columns we found the account of a fashionable ball. “Here we have our notables,” said he. We looked down the list and my eye lighted on the name Henry, “That’ll do for a last name,” said I. “Now for a first name. I want something short. None of your three-syllable names for me.” “Why don’t you use a plain initial letter, then?” asked my friend. “Good,” said I, “O is about the easiest letter written, and O it is.”
The O. Henry Award is a prestigious annual prize named after Porter and given to outstanding short stories. Several schools around the country bear Porter’s pseudonym.
In 1952, a film featuring five stories, called O. Henry’s Full House, was made. The episode garnering the most critical acclaim was “The Cop and the Anthem” starring Charles Laughton and Marilyn Monroe. The other stories are “The Clarion Call”, “The Last Leaf”, “The Ransom of Red Chief” (starring Fred Allen and Oscar Levant), and “The Gift of the Magi”.

The court tried him and put him in an Ohio prison for three years. While in prison, he began writing short stories and it is there that he took the pen-name O. He wrote this stories because he was living in a similar background like Jimmy Valentine.
